Investigation of the possible third image and mass models of the gravitational lens PMN J 1632 – 0033

چکیده
We present multi-frequency VLBA observations of PMN J1632–0033, one of the few gravitationally lensed quasars suspected of having a central “odd” image. The central component has a different spectral index than the two bright quasar images. Therefore, either the central component is not a third image, and is instead the active nucleus of the lens galaxy, or else it is a third image whose spectrum is inverted by free-free absorption in the lens galaxy. In either case, we have more constraints on mass models than are usually available for a two-image lens, especially when combined with the observed orientations of the radio jets of the two bright quasars. If there is no third quasar image, the simplest permitted model is a singular isothermal sphere in an external shear field: β = 2.05 −0.10 (2σ), where ρ(r) ∝ r. If the central component is a third image, a hypothesis which can be tested with future high-frequency observations, then the density distribution is only slightly shallower than isothermal: β = 1.91± 0.02 (2σ). We also derive limits on the size of a constant-density core, and the break radius and exponent of an inner density cusp. The Quintuple Quasar: Mass Models and Interpretation
The strange morphology of the six-component gravitational lens PMN J0134−0931 has resisted explanation. We present the first successful quantitative models for the system, based on the idea that there are two lens galaxies and two components of the background source. One source is quintuply imaged and corresponds to the five brightest observed radio components. The other source is triply imaged...
متن کاملMass and Dust in the Disk of a Spiral Lens Galaxy
Gravitational lensing is a potentially important probe of spiral galaxy structure, but only a few cases of lensing by spiral galaxies are known. We present Hubble Space Telescope and Magellan observations of the two-image quasar PMN J2004–1349, revealing that the lens galaxy is a spiral galaxy. One of the quasar images passes through a spiral arm of the galaxy and suffers 3 magnitudes of V -ban...
متن کاملMicrolensing of Central Images in Strong Gravitational Lens Systems
We study microlensing of the faint images that form close to the centers of strong gravitational lens galaxies. These central images, which have finally begun to yield to observations, naturally appear in dense stellar fields and may be particularly sensitive to fine granularity in the mass distribution. Since central images are highly overfocussed (i.e., demagnified compared to an unlensed ima...
متن کاملA possible gravitational lens in the Hubble Deep Field South
We model an apparent gravitational lens system HDFS 2232509–603243in the Hubble Deep Field South. The system consists of a blue V = 25 mag arc separated by 0. ′′9 from a red V = 22 mag elliptical galaxy. A mass distribution which follows the observed light distribution with a constant mass-to-light ratio can fit the arc component positions if external shear is added. A good fit is also obtained...
متن کاملThe Extragalactic Lens Vlbi Imaging Survey (elvis). I. a Search for the Central Image in the Gravitational Lens Pmn J1838–3427
The Extragalactic Lens VLBI Imaging Survey (ELVIS) searches for central images of lensed radio quasars, in order to measure the central density profiles of distant galaxies. Here we present sensitive multi-epoch Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of PMN J1838–3427 at 8 GHz, with a 1 σ noise level of 38 μJy beam. Based on the absence of a central image of the background source at this ...
